5 steps to get your own Twitter account started

We already wrote about the numerous possibilities of Social Media use e.g. networking with LinkedIn or location-based services like Gowalla and Facebook Places.

Today we show you the 5 most important steps to build your own Twitter account which is a great addition to your Social Media Marketing strategy.

1. Preparation

Before signing up to Twitter you have to think about a marketing strategy. Define your goals and identify your target audience ( read about audience segmentation in our last weeks article). As Social Media can be highly time-consuming you have to determine who will take care of the account and how many time will be spend on it.

2. Sign up

Becoming a “Tweeter” is simple. Just register with your name, email and a safe password et voilà: you´ re part of the fascinating Twitter world .

3. Profile yourself

Upload a meaningful avatar. It should be either the business logo or a professional portrait of you (depends if you want to build your personal network or create a corporate Twitter account).

Fill in your profile with important and interesting details. Use the 140 characters to provide basic information and use keywords to let people find you easier.

Give a link to your website / blog / MySpace page / Facebook account with a short description.

4. It’s all about appearance

Setting up a convenient design is essential. Twitter comes with some free themes but we recommend to customize your Twitter design. Use a corporate design for all Social Media activities to increase recognition value.

5. Don’t jump the gun

Before you start following people and writing own Tweets you should get to know Twitter. Learn the rules of the community, read what people in your branch write about and how follower respond. Get inspiration what is useful for your account and what future follower could be interested in and adjust your strategy to it.

This is just the beginning of your Twitter “career”. Use it to promote your business but don’t take it too serious. You don’t get clients with stubbornness and the world wide web has its own rules.
