Twitter has sheer endless advantages for businesses as well as for “regular” users. It boosts traffic for your blog or website, it helps you build your brand and raise awareness, you can promote your content faster and more effective, you find new audience, you get new inspiration and not to forget: it’s fun and you learn a lot. In our article last week we helped you with a 5-step instruction to get your own Twitter account started. You can read it here.

Today we answer 5 important questions about Twitter.

1. Who to follow?

Follow as many people as possible, but make sure they’re relevant for your business. This could be related companies, business associates and staff. I give you an example: As a designer you could add colleagues, related businesses, printing companies and all accounts which offer inspirational content and news about latest trends and developments.

You could also ask your employees to get a business Twitter account. They tweet what they’re working on and refer to your company account which will bring more traffic.

Consider that the number of people you follow should not be higher than the number of your followers.

2. What to write?

Twitter is a fast and personal way of customer care. Use the chance to communicate with your clients. Ask and answer questions. Be honest, transparent, constructive and reliable. If you made mistakes, admit them and find quick solutions to avoid bigger complaints.

Provide interesting and original content. Post new blog entries and news from your company. If you see interesting articles: Why not twitter them? Anything you find interesting might be for your users as well.

We also recommend to write about personal life e.g. give a book recommendation, but be careful: Nobody wants know what you’re eating or where you’re going. Focus on the essential.

3. How to reply?

To address someone directly you just write @ and the name (e.g. @print24). Please note that everybody can read this. When it comes to confidential data like telephone numbers use direct messages or ask them to send a mail to your corporate email-adress.

Make sure to reply to every question and react if people mentioned you. Be polite, a good complaint management is a must and your clients will thank you.

4. When to use Twitter?

Be available. Check your account on a daily basis and take time to reply and retweet. Answer even outside business hours to show your clients that you care for them. If you forgot to answer to a message or Tweet make sure you respond anyways. Better late than never!

5. Where to find..?

People use Twitter to talk about their experiences. To see what’s written about your business you should use programs like Tweetdeck or Hootsuite which support saved searches. Just type the keywords, save and everytime somebody mentions you, you’ll get a notification. These programs also work on mobile devices.

Following these simple rules Twitter will be an enrichment for your marketing and customer care. Remember: Your clients rank first.
