How to rock your customers with a calendar

You have to admit that even in times of ubiquitous web services a physical calendar can be a very nice thing to have. Sometimes just because it looks great and covers up that nasty miscoloured spot on the wall. If you agree with me your customers and business partners are also quite likely to. So, why aren’t you sending them a nice calendar for 2012?

Have you ever considered hanging a billboard in your customers office? No, because it sounds ridiculous? Well, a branded wall calendar is basically just that with a one year placement at ridiculously low cost. Take a look around your own office and you likely find more than one branded office product someone gave or sent you as a sign of appreciation.

Sending your best customers a free calendar is also a sign of appreciation. The higher the quality of the calendar, the higher the effect on your customers’ sense of appreciation. The famous Pirelli calendar tells the tale. First given away to loyal customers of tyre manufacturer Pirelli in 1964 it since turned into the world’s most famous calendar everybody and his dog is chasing after – not just because of the women in it. ;)

Scribble or dribble

There are two approaches to make your calendar an effective marketing tool.

1. Make it plain beautiful: Not much to say about that, just think Pirelli and produce a piece of art everybody wants.

2. Design your calendar to be useful: If you can make notes in it or if it features important dates on it (industry trade fairs, road shows) you are more likely to keep it for its usefulness.

By now you should have realised how powerful a tool such a calendar can be. At this point I should, however, issue a note of warning:

Do not overdo branding!

If your logo or slogan in different seasonal variations is everything the calendar shows than please don’t send it out. That’s not the point and people will rather ditch but not place it.
