Dinosaurs still rule
Well it was hardly going to be a quiet one – Star Wars: The Force Awakens has opened to a phenomenal weekend, raking in an estimated $517 million worldwide.
The force is strong with this one
That’s a lot of dosh, but not quite enough to break the previous record held by Jurassic World, which made an opening worldwide debut of $523.9 million. Dinosaurs still roam the Earth.
In the US and Canada, it was a different story. The film hit an estimated $238 million, thwarting Jurassic World, which brought in $204.6m domestically.
The Force Awakens also shattered the opening day record at the UK and Ireland box office with a £9.6m taking, beating previous record holder Spectre (£6.3m).
So all in all, Star Wars did as well as expected when it came to domestic markets, including Australia where it also broke box office records.
It’s just a shame it fell shy globally. Jurassic World had the advantage of opening in China when it was released earlier this year, while The Force Awakens won’t hit the People’s Republic until January 9.
