The real great shades of grey!
A logo needs to work well as a black & white version as you might have to use it for a Fax as much as you will use it for a high-quality print.
When a designer wants to create such a logo, he or she must make sure the lines are clean and all the areas of the logo are defined. It must not rely on the colours‘ help either.

Schwarz-Weiß-Tipp #1: Einfache Formen
As the color is gone, we must rely on the forms. They should stand out clearly. In this example, a square has been created using the Rectangle Tool, rotated by 45 degrees through Edit > Transform Rotate. A second, smaller form with a Front Shape Substract is what’s creating the frame.
Ctrl+J allows the form to be copied as we use the Move Tool to place it to the right side. Comibing it with some text make the prototype quite impressive.

Schwarz-Weiß-Tipp #2: Komplexe Formen
Black & white logos can prove themselves to be more complex. Here you can see a cyclist put inside a circular shape, therefore giving a symbolic shape. The speed is here shown as horizontal stripes spreading from the circular shape.

Schwarz-Weiß-Tipp #3: Graustufen
As a little inspiration and example: we should also say that, in addition to purely black logos, gray scale can be used to create a little bit more depth and varied shapes.
