The Sueddeutsche Zeitung Magazin (Issue 33, available since Friday, 20/08/2010) presents its readers a media-experience never seen before. Together with augmented reality specialists (AR) metaio a complete issue of the magazine got enriched with multimedia content available through a smartphone.

Week for week the editors of the SZ-Magazin have been featuring stories with unusual perspectives on things and topics. A completely new perspective is now unveiled with this augmented reality special. With the augmented reality technology of metaio iphone and android users can ‘take aim’ on certain articles to access multimedia content. When users look through their handset display at the cover picture showing a German celebrity (Sandra Maischberger) with hand covered face, they see her smiling broadly.

In the category „Sagen Sie jetzt nichts“ (Don’t say a word!), an interview without words with Lena Meyer-Landruth, they see speech bubbles with comments the Eurovision song contest winner couldn’t hold back. In addition to Axel Hacke’s column with a 3D animation of SZ illustrator Dirk Schmidt readers can find another highlight: The editors and authors of the SZ-Magazine reveal their favourite places in Munich, Berlin and Hamburg in a virtual city guide. A reader aiming the camera of his smartphone on his surrounds in these cities sees pointers to restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and hotels embedded superimposed on the real environment.

To enjoy the AR-special smartphone owners only have to download metaio’s free “junaio” AR browser from the iTunes or Android Market. The browser combines all software components required for the augmented reality experience in one single app, that offers various kinds of content in so-called ‘channels’. With the ‘SZ-Magazin’-channel you can see the animations and bring the issue to life. The channel ‘SZ-Magazin Lieblingsorte’ lets you explore the editorial staff’s recommendations in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.
