5 tips for business card networking

Today we launched a new business card format: the good old 90×50 mm. A while ago we already gave you some design advice and some inspiration with a collection of 333 creative business cards. But what if you already got your business cards printed? What to do with them? We give you some tips on networking with your business cards.

1. Carry them with you, everywhere

Make it a habit to take your business cards everywhere you go. Every accidental meeting e.g. at the grocery store or while relaxing in the park could be a chance to network. You might even meet somebody at a birthday party or family event. Take every chance to get in contact and always check for business cards.

2. Don’t be thrifty

There is no reason to keep business cards. If somebody asks for a second business card he might probably want to recommend you and you shouldn’t hesitate to use this opportunity. Business cards are an investment to your company growth and are not supposed to run to seed in your wallet.

3. Be polite and follow etiquette

Ask your counterpart for a business card when you hand yours out and don’t just put it in your pocket but read it. It might have an interesting detail which leads over to a lively discussion. Also pay attention to cultural differences. Never put the business card of a Japanese in your wallet which your carry in the backside pockets of your trouser as that’s where you would place the connection in his eyes. Rather put them in your breast pocket.

4. Make the other feel important

When receiving a business card, make short notes e.g. date or place you met this person. This reveals you’re interested and is also helpful for yourself to refer to this person later. If you make people feel important you make yourself more relevant to them. If you help people to get what they want, they’ll likely help you to get what you want too.

5. Attach business cards when you pay bills

May sound stupid but never underestimate the power of networking. Every person knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who could probably be in need of your services. Be confident to extend your network.

As you see, business cards are an amazing and easy way to get and stay in contact with people who could play a decisive role in your business development. Just seize the chance and start your own network.
