[App of the Week] Articles

Mobile Wikipedia for sore eyes

März 24th, 2011, 10:17 am

Our current app of the week is for all of those who don’t like the mobile version of Wikipedia. As so often in the Appstore you’ll find a plethora of free and paid apps aimed at the popular online encyclopaedia. It’s only that some of them even make the experience worse. Articles in turn really makes it a welcome sight for sore eyes.

The way it works is identical to the mobile Wikipedia site but it beats the original in terms of functionality. You can easily bookmark articles for later reading or “book shelving”. The latter is especially useful when you’re working on a project where you need to reference more than one article.

Text snippets can be marked and switching between the language versions of an article is a matter of a single click. Image presentation is optimized for mobile devices and the article overview makes it easy to navigate through lengthy entries.

Tabs simplify browsing multiple articles and font size can be adjusted for better reading. Another useful tool is the map feature which shows articles related to the area nearby once you allowed the app to use your current location. This is especially useful for thrifty travellers who don’t want to shell out money for a guide. :)
