Why you don’t have to be a marketing pro to get your business going

How to rock your business

When it comes to marketing there are dozens of opinions: What to do and when to do it and where to do for who to do. Sounds confusing? It is. Reading an article by David Frey on
marketingbestpractices.com made me think again of how difficult it is to find the right strategy and dimension for your business marketing.

So-called specialists preach rules over rules at workshops, perpetuate their messages in numerous books and spread them via world wide web. Contrary to other people I strongly believe that there are no determined rules as long as you always keep in mind what is good and efficient for your company.

Passion Passion Passion

There is a reason why you’re working so hard. Money is important, though especially start-ups are likely to invest more than they gain in the first months or year. It is passion what drives these people to carry on. Follow your vision. Sure it has to be realistic and profitable, but to reach that you need to do everything with deep ferventness and motivation.

No risk, no benefit

Don’t hide from your customers or competitors. Even if your mind screams no: trust your gut instinct and dare to try different strategies. Nothing is worse than insisting on old structures just because you’re afraid of changes.

But: In case you don’t have enough time to do the changing and monitoring you should better stay cautious. Take time to plan and implement new concepts.

You’re not superman

Always aim for more but focus on your possibilities and tap the full potential. If you feel like needing help, then ask for help. Nobody is able to handle and know all the important things; it’s no shame to ask for some support.

Think before acting

Think carefully. Every action has a result. Analyze your situation, target your audience and start with simple but effective methods like networking via business cards, explore which advantages the world wide web provides and print clear and expressive flyers to reach as many people as possible.

David’s Marketing advice

To refer to David Frey again, he listed some interesting marketing “ideas”, which I’d really like to share 3 of his advices with you.

1. „In the world of small business, you don’t have to be better than your competition, you just have to be different and then let people know about it.“

2. „Not all of your marketing efforts will be successful. The goal is to find what works by failing fast and cheap.“

3. „Your customers will tell you which marketing medium to use if you observe what they watch, where they spend their time, and what they listen to.“

What kind of experiences do you have with marketing your own business? Any stories you want to share? Don’t hesitate to leave a comment :)
