[App of the week] Shopsavvy

compare prices on the go

This week’s app is a great helper for your everyday life. Especially your bank account will come to love it. Shopsavvy allows you to scan barcodes of products or search them by keyword to compare prices on the go. There’s a ton of apps out there which can do that for you, but Shopsavvy seems to be one of the best at the moment.

One reason is the clean and intuitive interface. It manages to host quite a wealth of features without clutter. After scanning a barcode you see the best prices from online stores and local retailers around you. If a local deal is the most interesting for you, you can request directions via the preinstalled maps app on your iPhone (similar to Park Me, which we featured lately).

Besides scanning product barcodes or searching them by keyword Shopsavvy also offers a list of current online deals and promotions you can access by tapping the deal, which usually brings you directly to the suppliers landing page.

A big plus of the app are the various features for storing, organizing and sharing your picks. A simple history list let’s you access products you looked for lately, which is great when you wish to compare different products. Products can also be saved to lists, which you can easily share via the usual suspects Twitter, Facebook, Email and a few others. Technically it’s even possible to store/synchronize your lists through Dropbox (we will feature this soon), an online filesharing service with a great app for iPhone users. Yet, at the moment I couldn’t get it to work.

This brings me to some negative aspects I found while testing the app. The current release seems to be a big buggy. Especially when I tried to add a picture to a new product I got stuck occasionally and had to restart the app a couple of times to get it back to normal functionality.

Talking to the developers, however, revealed that these issues are known and should be fixed with the next update. With a bit of nagging on behalf of our readers I found out that the release is due this month. We’ll update this review as soon as the update is up and running.

One thing I really like beyond the app functionality is their consideration of small retailers. These often lack the resources to program their inventory management to work with the ShopSavvy API. To help them get online ShopSavvy introduced a special authorized dealer program for small dealers. This allows them to enter products without going through the approval loop user submissions are subjected to. Nice move!
